An interview methodology for exploring the values that community leaders assign to multiple-use landscapes. Ecology and Society

We report on a grounded theory research methodology to elicit the values that underpin community leaders’ advice on regional natural resource management. In-depth, semi-structured in-person interviews of 56 community leaders permitted respondents to explore their values and to elucidate some trade-offs. Furthermore, analysis of the coded transcripts provides evidence of the anthropocentric nature of values, and the importance of people, communities, and physical infrastructure. As well, the relative silence by community NRM leaders on supporting and regulating ecosystem services may reveal a lack of understanding of these functions rather than a discord in values. The tested methodology provides one approach to understanding the values of...

Middle Management in Agriculture: Roles, Functions, and Practices AgEcon
Bitsch, Vera; Yakura, Elaine K..
The role of middle managers in agriculture and agribusiness has been neglected by applied - as well as disciplinary - research, while gaining increasing importance in practice. This study provides an overview of middle management research and analyzes middle managers' authority in human resource decision-making and human resource management practices based on in-depth interviews analyzed through a grounded theory approach. Results show that these middle managers use both traditional and participative management practices to accomplish organizational goals, but would benefit from training tailored to their industry and specific needs.

Stewardship and Risk: An Empirically Grounded Theory of Organic Fish Farming in Scotland AgEcon
Georgakopoulos, Georgios; Ciancanelli, Penelope; Coulson, Andrea; Kaldis, Panayiotis.
It has long been assumed ownership gives farmers incentives to act as stewards for the land. On this basis, quasi-property rights are granted to fish farmers to encourage them to manage risks to the aquatic environment. This paper offers an empirically grounded theorization of fish farmers’ perspectives on these issues. Data were gathered via field research with Scottish salmon farmers who had switched from conventional to organic fish farmers’ risk management strategies offer little support for the view that property rights automatically create incentives for stewardship of the marine environment.

Top Performing Farmers are Information Rich: Case Studies of Sheep and Cattle Farmers in the South Island of New Zealand AgEcon
Verissimo, Andrea; Woodford, Keith.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the management behaviours of six top performing sheep and beef farmers from the South Island of New Zealand. Information was obtained through interviews using grounded theory qualitative research methodology. All six farmers were found to be information rich. They source information widely and with a discriminating behaviour. They read widely, typically about one hour per day. They participate in discussion groups but only when relevant information can be obtained. They regularly visit other farms and tend to associate with other high-performing people. They have well developed networks. They have challenging, relevant and achievable goals and targets. All six farmers plan well ahead but with a strong focus on...

Über die Rekonstruktion der Handlung „Einkaufen im Bioladen“ – ein Beispiel für qualitative Sozialforschung nach der „Grounded Theory“ AgEcon
Helmle, Simone.
This article presents a study about the symbolic significance of shopping in the organic store. The data are based on autobiographic reports and analyzed using grounded theory. The result is a concept with finding of identity and well-being as the main categories. According to these categories, hypotheses about the structures of personal values were proposed. Such structures are the perception of an alternative lifestyle as something normal, sympathetic ideas towards farm production and ideas about selfsufficiency. A strong point of the analysis is the abundance of empirical material, but the small number of cases and the subjects strong philosophical nature are restrictive.
